fallen chpofficer today. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. claudine wong joins us now from the field office where young storm as it based. heavy hearts there, claudine? >> reporter: absolutely. difficult day today, and some tough days ahead. the memorial grows out in front of this office. flowers, cards, just one of the many different ways people are expressing their grief and sorrow. there were no words spoken as officers raised the flag to half staff. the sorrow felt by those who knew him and those who stood in silent salute as evident in all of their faces. across the bay area, flags will fly at half staff in honor of a man who gave his life to serves others, a husband and father taken far too soon.

>> i cried. you know, i was crying when i heard about it >> reporter: cannot chp announced officer youngstrom's death last night outside john muir medical center where he had been on life support since the shooting. in fairfield where he lived with his wife and two sons, the community gathered for a prayer. today, people came to the martinez chp office, bringing flowers and notes. some were strangers. >> to give my respect. >> reporter: and some were part of the police and fire community that car each other community. in that community, being on duty means being on catch. >> that's what it's all about, you want to go back to your families. after the end of the watch. and this one didn't happen. >> reporter: that firefighter also told us that, when one member of the police and fire

family hurts, everyone hurts and everyone is hurting today. live here in martinez, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. there is a fund set up for the family of officer youngstrom. can you donate by going -- you can donate by going into any wells fargo bank branch and contribute to the officer kenyon youngstrom fund. police are looking into the background of the deceased. they have been going through his mobile home looking for any clues that might explain why he opened fire on a chp officer tuesday. lacy's only previous criminal record was a dui arrest in 2006. investigators say he suffered from mental illness, including bipolar disorder. the shooting surprised his neighbors. >> it caught everybody off guard. he was quiet, kept to himself kind of guy >> reporter: lacy lived formerly in sausalito and had a master's degree in computer

science from san francisco state a downed fiber optics cable on the peninsula caused traffic problem this is morning. the line came down at 10:20 a.m. on highway 101 in red wood city near marsh road. no one was hurt but chp closed both sides of the highway. all lanes were reopen about 45 minutes ago and traffic is moving normally again. oakland police are looking for a suspect in connection with a deadly morning shooting. it happened just after 2:30 a.m. on macarthur boulevard. the victim was shot multiple times. just after the shooting, the suspect got into a car and left the scene . a motive for the shooting is not known. the victim is mandro rashal. he was at a friend's house just before he was killed. >> this boy had no business getting shot.

there is no reason why. he is not a violent person. he is not out there selling drugs. he is just a guy trying to do right. >> and he is the grand son of the oakland former mayor. there were 73 in the city as of this time last year. channel 2's cameras went along as santa clara sheriff checked on people on probation. they targeted 15 offenders known to have gang affiliations. under the terms of their probation, they have to allow police into their homes at any time. officers were checking for drugs, guns and the presence of other gang members. >> our goal today is to enforce the laws to deter people from committing crimes and being gang affiliated, you know.

educate parents who may not know their children have gang affiliation, show them what to look for. >> reporter: deputies made at least two arrests, one for drugs and one for possession of a firearm. there is no word on how many probation violations they found in all. a san jose man will be taken into custody shortly after a series of bizarre events this morning. it ended with him fall from a roof and getting stuck between two walls. janine de la vega joins us live to tell us why the victory is a suspect. good afternoon, janine. >> good afternoon, tori. this wall right here is on the other side of capitol orchard expressway. and this one is this side of the wall. you can see how narrow this is. as you go up, it widens but a person can barely move once he

is trapped here. this is exclusive video that we got of the suspect being lifted. he was trapped between orchard capitol warehouse. >> had he removed his clothes when crews found him in the gap. unable to movement he had fallen 20 feet down. >> he had ripped a lot of clothes down going down the bidding because that's a pretty good drop. at that point, they had to call 911. officers determined that corona was the driver that chp had been chasing. he crashed on the other side of the street and ran away. he said he was trying to run from two people chasing him with knives and then admitted, yeah, i was involved in an accident or i was part of an accident and i was just trying to get away. >> reporter: firefighters used the ladder and rig add pulley with a rope to rescue him.

it took 90 minutes. >> this is not different than someone who had fall french a chimney and needs to be extricated from a chimney. this gentleman had more room and the only thing that kept him from extricating himself was the buttons alongside the orchard capital supply. >> reporter: he was taken to the hospital. he has not been booked into jail yet but he has been administratively booked on paper. he is facing charges of hit-and- run and violating a warrant on an unrelated criminal matter. he may also be charged with evading police. janine de la vega, ktvu ktvu. >> thank you, janine more than two dozen people had to make quick escapes during a fire in san francisco's mission district. it started around 1:00 at an apartment building near the fair oaks district. everyone was able to make it

highway 17 was shut down in both directions for several hours overnight. the cab of a truck carrying liquid nitrogen melted after catching fire around 10:00 p.m. it happened near summit road in the santa cruz mountains. the fire burned part of the hillside as well but flames did not get burned through the tank. the incident caused a big traffic problem but no one was injured. president obama is getting ready to give his big speech tonight on the last night of

detailed rebuttal of policies proposed by mitt romney and paul ryan. >> they want to cut taxes even deeper than president bush did. >> the 42nd president spoke roughly 30 minutes longer than he was supposed to, ad will libbing and taking liberty. secretary of state hillary clinton watched the speech from an embassy in southeast asia. >> i have received the as prepared and i would love to compare that with the as delivered version. >> president obama will talk about ideas, achievable concrete things that we can do for this country to move it forward. >> reporter: citing the potential for severe thunderstorms, the convention committee has moved the president's speech indoors here to this arena instead of an outdoor stadium that seats 10s of thousands more people. the move has become quite a distraction and a logistical

stood hospital expansion doubles the existing hospital size. it also adds 150 know patient rooms and is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment. the hospital says it's expanding in order to respond to a growing communities it need. >> this is one of the foremost children's hospitals in the united states. we take some very difficult cases here and we are growing to meet that need. >> the expansion is part of the stanford university medical center's renewal project which is rebidding and modernizing if a us is there. a severely wounded soldier is receiving a special gift in the south bay. army sargeant brian jurrjens suffered a broken leg. he and his wife had been living in a private military complex in mountain view since january. as we showed you live on ktvu mornings on 2, volunteers are bidding a new outside railing and ramp for his home as well

out of the region. high cloud moving out of the showers, basically towards the sierra. here is a closer inspection once again. we could still have a few afternoon clouds build up over the higher terrain, over toward mount diablo, what mill to, you may see some those popcorn clouds as we head into the often hours. the main instability out to the east, we could still have some storms developing offshore as we head into the overnight hours. fog will be a factor at the coast, possibly a few patches into the bay. clearing, we do head into the afternoon hours once again. temperatures this afternoon, a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. you can see some 80s out towards concord, antioch and brentwood. santa cruz, mid-70s and san mateo, right about 72. here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast. going into friday, we'll continue to warm things up for friday and saturday. saturday looks like it will be the warmest day of the upcoming weekend. that means temperatures inland
